The Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam has published a statement regarding Father Paul Vlaar and his World Cup Mass, about which I wrote a few days ago. Here is my translation:
On Sunday 11 July, Pastor Paul Vlaar of Obdam celebrated the Holy Eucharist in the spirit of the Football World Cup, wearing an orange chasuble, and did insufficient justice, in text and form, to the sanctity of the Eucharist. The footage of this has caused indignation among faithful here and abroad.
In the past the bishop had impressed upon Fr Vlaar not to mix the Holy Eucharist with profane events. The pastor has said to fully support this and promised to abide. The pastor’s pastoral zeal and commitment are not under discussion.
Following this new incident the bishop again met with Fr. Vlaar, imposed an immediate time of reflection on him and relieved him of his priestly duties for the time being. Things will once again be considered at a later date.
The situation created by the ‘orange Mass’ was a difficult and painful one for many people. The comments in my blog reflected that. I am glad to see that Bishop Punt made the best decision at this time. Change must ideally not be imposed from Rome, but must come from the person in question. A time of reflection allows for that.
Let’s keep Fr. Vlaar in our prayers, that his time of reflection may be fruitful.

Father Vlaar is a man of this time. You live in the past. His church is full of happy people. Other churches are emptie. This is a big mistake of the Diocese of Haarlem-Amsterdam. Wen a priest rapes a child is there no punishmand. The Catolic church makes a big mistake and must be a shamed. Sorry for my bad English.

Your reply is full of mistakes and misconceptions, but I understand the emotion behind it. It’s great that everyone is Fr. Vlaar’s former parish is happy, but what are they happy about? That they’re having such a good time together, or that they celebrate the actual presence of Christ among them?

Wat een ongelooflijk hysterische reactie van het bisdom. Eindelijk een pastoor die daadwerkelijk heeft begrepen dat de kerk er hoort te zijn als verlengstuk van God en schakel tussen de gemeenschap en God en niet dient ter vervreemding van Gods woord en liefde voor een ieder. Hij zet zich in voor God, de kerk en de gemeenschap en smeedt daarmee een band, terwijl elders in het land de kerken leeglopen door vervreemding en ook door het onbegrip van het niet ingrijpen van de kerkhoofden in zaken die veel ernstiger zijn dan de “oranje”-preek van Pastoor Paul. Vreemd er zijn allerlei doofpotzaken, maar een vernieuwende, onbekrompen geest als Pastoor Paul wordt geschorst. Bisschop Punt, kijk nog eens goed naar uw overwegingen, is het echt zo erg dat de kerk en daarmee het woord van God, onze echte leider, dichterbij de mensen wordt gebracht die men zegt lief te hebben en te willen begeleiden? Welk een angst heeft er geregeerd toen men het besluit nam om Pastoor Paul te schorsen? Pastoor Paul ik hoop dat u de moed niet opgeeft en u zelf blijft en dit alles ziet als een pad welk u sterker zult maken.

Wrude, dit draait niet om zomaar een onder-onsje. Dit is de heilige eucharistie. We kunnen de mis niet laten verwateren. Als dit een bijeenkomst betrof met de pastoor en niet de eucharistieviering, dan was het een minder groot probleem geweest. Ik ben blij dat de pastoor populair is en mensen aantrekt. En juist hierom moet de pastoor voorzichtig zijn, want de Kerk is niet slechts zijn parochie. De Kerk is de hele wereldgemeenschap. Op sommige momenten is matigheid gewenst, zodat hij zo juist zijn parochie kan dienen zoals hij het wenst.

….is er dan niemand die zit dat hij mensen aanspreekt, inspireert en betrekt bij het geloof. Hij mag zijn eucharistieviering dan niet helemaal volgens de regels hebben gedaan… maar het geloof leeft in het dorp. Het is niet (alleen) de gezelligheid; het is de saamhorigheid! Dat is ook een groot onderdeel van het geloof. Respect, vertrouwen, en geloven, gaat hier hand in hand. Paul doet mensen geloven anno 2010. Een schorsing voor zo een bezige pastoor voelt als onrecht!

Though I am an American and a Roman Catholic (of Basque & Spanish descent ironically) the defeat of Holland saddened me tremendously….

This priest, Fr. Paul Vlaar, did great evil. This was a blasphemy against the Eucharist. Jesus Christ is substantially present in His Body and His Blood in Sacred Mass and this priest has committed a great crime. This priest should be punished in a monastery for years. It is up to the People of God to withold their donations. This will lead little children away from God.

Hi John,
It’s obvious you are not aware of the current feelings of the Dutch about the Catholic Church versus children.
Otherwise you would not use a phrase as:’This will lead little children away from God.’ As that seemed to have been the most sane thing they could had done for years.
And if you think that filling your church with people you can tell about the word of god in a way people of these times understand instead of larded with ancient rituals is ‘doing great evil’. Then I have my doubts about the side you’re on.
