I guess it’s an achievement in someone’s book

You’ve got to admit: it is something of an achievement from the NCRV. They’ve managed to reply to the open letter sent to them by a number of Catholic bloggers, clergy and other people (including myself), while avoiding to actually mention any of the points of concern raised in the letter.

No mention of the three ways of sacrilege: using the Eucharist as a form of protest, taken the Host outside and threatening to throw it in a waste bin. No mention of the NCRV’s Christian origin, which made the TV-item all the more bitter. No mention of the unsatisfactory automated e-mail sent to all those who took the trouble to complain. No mention of even trying to acknowledge the Catholic faith, and the central position of the Eucharist in it.

Instead, we got this:

Following our item ‘Holy Host’ there have been protests from Roman Catholic quarters. The NCRV is pleased to reply to the open letter she received today (15 March 2010):

Man Bijt Hond is a lightly satirical program. With a smile and a tear it magnifies items in the news. The intention is to stimulate and trigger discussion. That, after all, is part of satire.

The (renewed) discussion about the position of practising homosexual people in the church lead to a violent demonstration [this was not the reason for the open letter]. And one thing was clear: the demonstration in the church of Den Bosch was painful for the church, but she was equally painful for the homosexual faithful involved [who started it, I might add]. For the editors of Man Bijt Hond this was cause to pay attention to it, in her own recognisable way.

The NCRV also has other programs which paid attention to this topic [which is totally beside the point]. In the radio show Schepper & Co, for example, there was an extensive discussion between Henk Krol, chief editor of the Gaykrant and presenter Yvo van der Goot, about the place of homosexual faithful in the church [I repeat, not the point of the open letter]. In such a conversation there is obviously space to shed light on multiple aspects on a question like this. All this in the hope of doing people justice, despite their sexual orientation [Once more, not the point of the letter. And desecrating the Eucharist is the opposite of doing anyone justice].

Equality and tolerance are important principles for the NCRV which can be seen in our programs, in each their own way [Except when that equality and tolerance should be towards Catholics, of course].

I am amazed. The letter wasn’t hard or difficult, but they still manage to totally miss the point. NCRV, congratulations, you have lost viewers. Wow.

But at least this time we got a reply without spelling errors.

In context

Since the issue of abuse in Catholic institutions keeps on raging and escalating, I think it’s good to share some recent publications about it. On Saturday the Holy See press office released this statement, reiterating and defending the measures taken by the German bishop’s conference to deal with the issue, the Church’s standing canonical regulations about sexual abuse, and one specific issue very close to the pope.

Father Federico Lombardi SJ, head of the press office, also refers to an interview by Msgr. Charles J. Scicluna, which is available here.

Both texts are quite informative, and the interview specifically allows for the current problems (and let’s not forget that these refer to things that happened at least 30 years ago, in general) to be seen in a broader context.

I’m working on a translation into Dutch of both texts, and will link to them here when they’re ready.

Katholiek protest tegen heiligschennis door NCRV

Uncharacteristically for my blog, a post in Dutch. This is an open letter to the NCRV in response to the desecration of the Holy Eucharist as shown in their tv program Man Bijt Hond. The letter is an initiative of Catholic blogs Kattekliek and Beautiful Blues, and has been signed by a few dozen people, among them members of the clergy.

I don’t usually sign petitions and open letters, but the seriousness of the subject and the need for the Catholic voice to be heard in this is too important. After all, this touches the very heart of our faith, and it is not okay to use that as a toy or a means to ridicule and insult people.

The letter requests a public apology from the NCRV, especially in light of the totally unsatisfactory automated response (including spelling mistakes) that was sent earlier, and which I shared here on my blog.

Please excuse the bad layout of the letter. It is a problem with WordPress, which apparently is unable to outline texts properly.

Betreft: Open Brief over heiligschennis in “Man Bijt Hond”

Geacht bestuur,

Op maandag 1 maart j.l. werd in het NCRV-programma “Man Bijt Hond” de columnist en theatermaker Mark Wagemakers gevolgd. Te zien was hoe hij bij wijze van statement in de Sint Janskathedraal in Den Bosch een Hostie ging “halen”. Hij nam deze vervolgens mee naar buiten om hem pas daar tot zich te nemen.

Op drie manieren is dit heiligschennis. Allereerst omdat “Man bijt Hond” het Sacrament op deze manier tot podium maakte voor het maken van een persoonlijk statement tégen de Kerk. Ten tweede omdat de Hostie direct dient te worden genuttigd en absoluut niet mag worden meegenomen naar buiten.

Tot slot omdat “Man Bijt Hond” bewust lange tijd openhield of Wagemakers de Hostie ging opeten of weggooien. Duidelijk werd de suggestie gewekt dat het wel eens op dat laatste zou kunnen uitdraaien, doordat in de laatste momenten voordat Wagemakers de Hostie opat prominent in beeld een vuilnisbak te zien was, waar hij zich steeds naartoe draaide. Toen hij alsnog – onder kwetsende bewoordingen – de Hostie nuttigde, maakte hij het Sacrament en de Drie-eenheid belachelijk.

Het is voor katholieken kwetsend genoeg dat dit, onder het mom van de in Nederland verworven vrijheden, op deze manier op televisie is gekomen. Dat het ook nog eens gedaan wordt door een christelijke omroep die zich beroept op een 85 jaar oude traditie van “respect”, ervaren wij als ronduit verbijsterend en bijzonder pijnlijk.

Enkele katholieken hebben inmiddels hun beklag gedaan en kregen daarop allemaal hetzelfde “standaardantwoord”, dat ver beneden de maat was:

Het is nooit onze bedoeling geweest om mensen hiermee te kwetsen, sorry hier voor.

Wij hopen dat u met veel plezier naar ons programma kan blijven kijken.

Man bijt hond

Christus Zelf is in de Heilige Eucharistie aanwezig, waarin Hij Zich aan ons meedeelt. Dat is de kern van het katholieke geloof. Door er zo mee om te gaan, heeft u veel katholieken in het diepst van hun geloof gekwetst. Bovenstaande routinemail doet degenen die aan deze pijn uiting hebben gegeven geen recht. Een publiekelijk en inhoudelijk excuusvan de NCRV is onzes inziens op zijn plaats. Op deze manier kan de NCRV de band met het gelovig katholieke deel van Nederland weer enigszins herstellen en doet zij teven haar reputatie als christelijke omroep eer aan. Wij vragen u dan ook om deze publieke actie ook publiekelijk recht te zetten.
