Pope to beatify Pope John Paul II on 1 May

Foreign websites are publishing the official decree from the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints about the beatification of Venerable Pope John Paul II. Read the full text here, courtesy of the Catholic Herald.

I’ll be whipping up a Dutch translation, to be published later this afternoon. Keep your eyes peeled.

The beatification will take place in Rome on the 1 May, Divine Mercy Sunday, and Pope Benedict XVI will preside over the Mass himself, only the second time he has done. The first time was the beatification of Blessed John Henry Newman last year.

EDIT: It took a bit longer than expected, but here is the Dutch translation of the decree.

I'm a 36-year-old lay Catholic from the diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden. I write about the Catholic Church in the Netherlands. I not only enjoy bringing selected developments to the attention of readers, but I also think that it is sometimes important to allow a wider audience to read about the state of the Church in the Netherlands. That's why a fair number of posts about that topic will be translations of Dutch articles, episcopal writings and whatever else.

  1. It is with great joy when I read the news about the beatification of the Divine Mercy Pope, late John Paul II. Truly, a gift to an aching, hurt, broken world whose journey in promoting the DIVINE MERCY has inspired me spiritually. After attending the first World Apostolic Congress On Mercy in Rome last April 2008, the mandate from Pope Benedict was to bring the message of His Mercy to the ” ends of the earth “. Answering to that pontifical call and Cardinal Schonborn, president of the World Congress, the Divine Mercy Apostolate Holland was born among the English-speaking communities. On May 1, 2011, we will be celebrating the Feast of the Divine Mercy Sunday in Amsterdam. We will joining the entire church in jubilation upon John Paul’s beatification- the Divine Mercy Pope. Blessed John Paul, pray for us and the whole world !
